About
Refuge de Saint-Laurent sits at 2,491m in the Écrins massif, on the main hiking route between Vallouise and the Pelvoux peaks. The hut lies above the Gîte de Béranger, roughly 4 hours from Ailefroide village. Most climbers approaching Mont Pelvoux (3,946m) or the Grand Pic de Pelvroix use this as their launch point. The final approach is steep and exposed in places—come prepared with scrambling experience and proper footwear. Winter access is unreliable and the hut is not staffed outside summer season.
The refuge has capacity for around 35 people in dormitory rooms. The warden provides hot meals and drinks; bring your own sleeping bag. Water comes from mountain sources. The kitchen is simple but adequate for resupply before high-altitude pushes. The hut is usually open from late June through September, depending on snow conditions and staffing. Earlier in summer the approach may be snow-choked and dangerous.
Book directly by phone well ahead if you're planning for July or August. Contact details and current opening dates are available through the Vallouise tourism office or the local FFCAM section. A deposit secures your bed and meal reservation. Expect the hut to be fully booked 2–3 weeks out during peak season. If you arrive without a reservation, ask at the Gîte de Béranger whether space is available above.
