Refuge des Cosmiques
2.9About
The refuge operates year-round and sleeps 60 in shared dormitories. Meals are cooked on-site; half-board is standard and meals are substantial (you'll need the calories). Water must be melted from snow or ice. The hut is small, basic, and crowded during climbing season. Overnight stays are essential for anyone attempting Mont-Blanc via the normal route—the climb to the summit and back demands an early start from here. Facilities are minimal: no shower, squat toilet, mattresses only. July and August are heaving; June and September offer better conditions with fewer people. Winter access requires mountaineering experience and proper kit.
Book directly by phone as early as possible. July reservations should be confirmed 3-4 months ahead. The refuge is managed by the FFCAM. Phone ahead even if you hold a reservation, as avalanche risk or extreme weather occasionally forces closure. Arrive with headtorch and spare batteries—the final approach is ropey in darkness.
