Refuge du Couvercle

Refuge du Couvercle sits at 2,683m in the Vallée de Chamonix, on the approach to Mont-Blanc. You reach it from Les Praz de Chamonix via the Mer de Glace cable car and a 1.5-hour walk across the glacier, or on foot from Chamonix in roughly 3 hours by the direct path through the forest. The hut guards access to the Géant Glacier and routes toward Mont-Blanc's eastern approaches. Winter access requires serious mountaineering skills; summer approach is straightforward but demands caution on the glaciated terrain.
The refuge manages 128 beds across multiple dormitory rooms. It serves hearty dinners and breakfasts, with packed lunches available for onward routes. Water comes from snowmelt. The toilets are basic. The building itself is functional rather than comfortable—expect cold nights even in summer and crowded dormitories during peak season. The hut operates year-round but is staffed reliably from June to September; winter visits require advance coordination and self-sufficiency. The location makes it essential for any two-day Mont-Blanc circuit and popular with parties approaching the Vallée Blanche.
Book directly by email or phone at least two months ahead for July and August. The hut fills completely during summer weekends and the weeks around mid-August. June and September are quieter but still busy. Arrive early in the day if you plan to continue to higher camps or routes. Mobile reception is poor; confirm your reservation before departure from the valley.
