Cabin des Grands Plans

Cabane des Grands Plans sits at 2,150m in the Hautes-Alpes, a small refuge deep in working mountain terrain. Access is from Villar-d'Arêne via the Vallée de la Guisane, a 4–5 hour approach depending on snow and trail condition. This is a hut for people who navigate unmarked ground. GPS coordinates and a detailed topoguide are essential. The cabin lies below the Col de la Cabre and works as a base for traverses into the Chaîne de l'Écrins massif.
The cabin holds 3 beds across a single small room, making it functional rather than comfortable. It is unguarded and unstaffed—you arrive to a locked cabin and must collect keys in advance from the FFCAM office in Gap or Grenoble. There is no warden, no meals, and no water source at the site. Bring everything you need: fuel, food, water containers, and a stove. The cabin is open year-round but snow access is uncertain November to May. Winter mountaineering parties use it as a staging point; summer hikers are rare.

Confirm water sources and trail conditions with them before you go. This is not a casual overnight stop—plan conservatively and carry backup shelter.
