About
Refuge du Cassu sits at 2,264m in the Chaîne de Belledonne, accessed from the village of Allevard via the hamlet of Prapoutel. The approach takes 3–4 hours on foot from Prapoutel, following well-marked trails through alpine meadows and larch forest. The hut serves as a base for day trips to Pic de la Pointe de Loup (2,663m) and traverses across the Belledonne massif. Summer access by vehicle to Prapoutel shortens the approach significantly.
The refuge manages 30–35 beds in simple dorms and can feed 50+ guests at dinner. Full board (breakfast, packed lunch, evening meal) is available; half-board is standard. The kitchen provides hearty mountain food. Water comes from a spring; heating and showers are basic. The hut operates June through September, with May and October open weekends only depending on snow. It's managed by the FFCAM and maintains traditional alpine refuge standards—no frills, reliable shelter and food.
Book 8–10 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the refuge directly by email or phone to confirm availability and discuss meal plans. July and early August are busiest; June and September offer quieter conditions. The hut operates on a first-come basis once booked, so arrival before 18:00 is recommended to secure your place and collect your meal assignment.
