Le Fontenil

Refuge du Fontenil sits at 1,610m on the eastern side of Massif du Dévoluy, in the southern Dauphiné Alps. From Superdévoluy village (1,500m), it's 1.5 hours on foot via the GR94 trail. The hut sits above the Cirque du Devouluy, a natural amphitheater of limestone cliffs. Access is straightforward spring through autumn; winter approaches are unreliable and require winter hiking experience. The location works as a base for day walks in the Dévoluy massif or as a stop on longer ridge traverses linking toward Col de Cabre.
The refuge is run by FFCAM and has capacity for around 60 people across dormitory rooms. Full-board meals are available in season. Facilities include running water and composting toilets; there's no shower. The season typically runs mid-May to mid-October, with the hut closed in winter. It's a working mountain hut, not a hotel—expect basic comfort and shared spaces.
Book directly with the hut by phone well ahead for July and August; July fills six to eight weeks beforehand. June and September are quieter. Groups over 15 should reserve a month early. The hut serves both hikers and climbers acclimatizing for higher peaks, so check conditions in early season before committing.
