Refuge de Chabournéou

Refuge de Chabournéou sits at 1998m in the Hautes-Alpes, on the eastern flank of the Massif du Dévoluy. The hut anchors access routes into this limestone massif and makes a solid base for ridge walks and peak ascents in the range. Most parties approach from the Dévoluy valley via the hamlet of Saint-Disdier; the walk in takes 3–4 hours depending on your line and fitness. Winter access is unreliable due to snow and avalanche risk above 1600m.
The refuge operates year-round but is manned only seasonally—confirm opening dates before planning a winter visit. It has 40 beds split across several dorms. Meals are cooked on-site; book dinner and breakfast when you reserve. Water comes from a reliable spring. The hut has no shower or heating beyond body warmth, so bring layers even in summer. Mobile signal is weak to absent. FFCAM members get a small discount on the room rate.
Phone ahead to check current conditions and staffing. The busiest weekends run from mid-June through September; July and August weekends fill 6–8 weeks ahead. Weekday slots open up faster. Book directly by phone rather than email if you need confirmation same-week. Arrive before dark—the approach scrambles aren't safe in poor light.
