Refuge de Vallonpierre

Refuge de Vallonpierre sits at 2,262m in the Hautes-Alpes, in the shadow of Pic de Cabarrou. The hut is reached from Château-Ville-Vieille via a 4-hour hike gaining roughly 900m elevation. Most parties approach from the Queyras valley side, following marked trails through larch forest and alpine pasture. Winter access is difficult; the hut operates seasonally, typically from June through September. The location works as both a destination in itself and a waypoint on longer traverses through the Queyras massif.
The refuge maintains 39 beds across multiple dormitory rooms. Half-board is standard: dinner, breakfast, and packed lunches available on request. The kitchen operates daily during season and the guardian is resident. Water comes from a spring; showers are basic. The hut has no electricity grid connection, relying on solar power and gas. Mobile signal is unreliable. Meals are simple and substantial—expect standard mountain fare rather than restaurant cooking. Expect to sleep 6–8 people per room.
Book directly by phone as early as possible if you're planning a July or August visit. The hut fills weekends regularly during summer. Weekday visits have better availability. Email enquiries may take several days to receive replies; phone contact is faster and preferred by the guardian. Confirm your arrival time when booking—the guardian needs to plan meal portions and fuel. Bring a sleeping bag liner; blankets are provided but basic.
