Refuge de Font-Turbat

Refuge de Font-Turbat sits at 2,178m in the Hautes-Alpes, on the edge of Parc National des Écrins. The hut serves as a base for hiking in the southern Massif des Écrins. Most parties reach it from the Vallée du Drac, starting from either Pont-du-Fossé or Saint-Jean-de-la-Porte. The approach takes 3–4 hours depending on your starting point and fitness. The terrain is straightforward—no scrambling required—making it accessible to confident hill walkers.
The refuge holds 51 beds across several rooms. Meals are available: expect simple, hot dinners and breakfasts that fuel the next day's hiking. Water comes from the spring on-site. The hut runs from mid-June to mid-September, depending on snow conditions. Winter access is possible but irregular; check conditions before planning an off-season visit. The site lies on established routes to neighbouring huts and peaks in the Écrins massif, so you can plan multi-day traverses.
Book directly by phone with FFCAM several weeks ahead, especially for July and August. The hut fills regularly during summer. Confirm opening dates before travelling, as early-season snowmelt can delay access. The refuge operates as a working mountain base, not a hotel—expect no frills, but solid hospitality and a real sense of the mountains.
