About
Refuge de la Selle sits at 2,673m on the eastern flank of the Chaîne de l'Épine in the Hautes-Alpes, deep in Parc National des Écrins territory. The most direct approach is from Vallouise via the Gîte de la Selle and Pré de la Selle, a steady 4–5 hour climb gaining 1,200m. The alternative route from Col de Bramans to the south takes 3–4 hours but requires previous acclimatisation. Both paths are clear and well-marked. The hut works as a base for crossing into the Valais or climbing peaks in the Massif du Pelvoux chain—notably Pic de la Selle itself and access to higher routes towards Col du Galibier approaches.
The refuge operates year-round but is substantially quieter outside summer and early autumn. It has 60 beds spread across multiple dormitories and a few smaller rooms. Half-board is standard; meals are cooked to order and reflect mountain practicality rather than fine dining. Water comes from a spring; the hut has basic heating and gas lighting in some areas. Mobile signal is patchy. The warden lives on-site and knows the local peaks and passes intimately.
Book directly with the refuge in June if targeting July or August weekends. Email or phone ahead 2–3 days before arrival to confirm availability and meal plans. The hut fills fastest during school holidays (mid-July to late August) and clear weather weekends. Winter visits require advance notice and may require self-catering depending on staffing.
