Refuge du Châtelleret

Refuge du Châtelleret sits at 2,225m in the Hautes-Alpes, on the eastern edge of Parc National des Écrins. The hut serves as a base for routes into the Chaîne de la Grave and access to higher peaks. Most hikers approach from the Vallée du Champoléon. The walk from Champoléon village takes roughly 3 hours on a steady trail through larch forest and alpine pasture.
The refuge holds 68 beds across shared dormitories. Half-board (demi-pension) is standard: expect hearty dinners and packed lunches. The kitchen prepares food for high-altitude work; portions are substantial. Showers are available but water is precious at this elevation. The hut opens mid-June through late September; weather can force closures into July. Winter access is possible but irregular—contact ahead if planning out-of-season visits. FFCAM members receive rate reductions.
Book directly by phone at least 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August. July weekends fill completely; June and September offer more flexibility. Ring to confirm the hut is staffed and water supply is adequate—early-season snowmelt can affect availability. Solo hikers and small groups usually find beds with shorter notice. The refuge keeper can advise on current trail conditions and weather stability for onward routes.
