Refuge des Écrins

Refuge des Écrins sits at 3,161m in the Parc National des Écrins, on the standard approach to Barre des Écrins (4,102m). The hut is reached from Ailefroide in the Vallée du Drac Noir: allow 4–5 hours from the Pré de Madame Carle carpark, climbing steeply through moraine and scree to the refuge. This is serious mountain terrain, not a tourist walk. The route is well-marked but exposed to rockfall in places; go early and carry a helmet.
The refuge holds 116 beds across multiple dormitories. Meals are included with accommodation: a hot dinner and breakfast fuels the pre-dawn start needed for Barre des Écrins. There is no shower facility. Water comes from snowmelt and glacial streams; the hut operates from June to September, though late June and early September can be snowy and unreliable. The refuge sits on the edge of the Glacier Blanc, so expect cold nights and rapidly changing weather even in summer.
Book well ahead: July and August fill months in advance, especially mid-July to mid-August. Contact the FFCAM directly by phone to reserve. Half-board (bed plus dinner and breakfast) is the standard option. Arrive on foot only—the hut is not accessible by vehicle. Start your approach in early morning to avoid afternoon rockfall. Do not attempt Barre des Écrins in poor visibility or unstable snow conditions.
