Chalet Refuge du Pré de Madame Carle

Chalet Refuge du Pré de Madame Carle sits at 1,600m in the Vallée de la Guisane, roughly 12km south of Briançon in the Hautes-Alpes. The approach follows the valley floor from the village of Pelvoux via a well-marked trail that takes 3–4 hours on foot. The hut is accessible by 4WD vehicle during summer, though hiking in gives you better control over your arrival time and energy levels. The setting provides direct access to climbing and ski-touring objectives around Pic de Cayre and Mont Pelvoux.
The refuge operates as a simple mountain hut run by the FFCAM, with capacity for around 30 people in shared dormitory rooms. Meals are available on a half-board basis; the kitchen provides decent portions focused on fuelling hikers rather than culinary ambition. Water comes from the valley stream. There's a wood stove for communal warmth. The hut opens from June through September, with variable operations during shoulder months depending on weather and staffing.
Book directly with the refuge by email or phone as far ahead as possible—8 weeks minimum for July and August weekends. July is the busiest month; aim for early June or September if your schedule allows. Notify the guardian of your arrival time so meals can be prepared. The hut has no shower or bathhouse; bring a headlamp and warm layers even in summer.
