Refuge du Galibier sits at 2,642m on the Col du Galibier, the watershed between the Maurienne and Tarentaise valleys in the Hautes-Alpes. The approach from Valloire takes 3.5 hours on marked trails through alpine pasture. From the north via Saint-Michel-de-Maurienne, allow 4–5 hours.
