Refuge du Viso

Refuge du Viso sits at 2,460m in the Cottian Alps, deep in the Parc National des Écrins. The hut is accessed from the Vallée du Guil via the village of Abriès. Most parties approach from Abriès (allow 4–5 hours on foot). The final stretch crosses open terrain with minimal shelter, so weather conditions matter. In poor visibility, route-finding becomes serious; bring a map and compass. The hut works as a base for climbing Pic de Viso (3,841m), the highest peak in the Cottian range, or for traversing the upper valleys.
The hut holds 65 beds across several rooms and bunk dormitories. FFCAM manages the refuge and opens it seasonally, typically from June to September; check opening dates before planning. Half-board (bed and meals) is standard. The kitchen serves simple mountain food. There is no WiFi, no shower, and no fixed power for devices. Water is available. The hut operates on a self-service basis during shoulder seasons, so confirm staffing levels when you book.
Ring FFCAM directly to reserve. July and August fill quickly—book 4–6 weeks ahead for peak season. June and September are quieter and often have availability with 1–2 weeks' notice. The hut is remote; arriving without a reservation is risky, especially on weekends.
