Premier Chalet de Combe Madame

Premier Chalet de Combe Madame sits at 1,430m in the Isère, deep in the forested valleys south of Grenoble. You reach it by hiking 2–3 hours from the nearest road end, making it a true mountain refuge rather than a drive-up shelter. The approach winds through beech and spruce forest, gaining roughly 400m elevation. The location works well as a base for day hikes into the surrounding granite ridges or as an overnight stop on longer traverses through the pre-Alps.

The hut sleeps 8 people in simple dormitory bunks. Meals are available—confirm details when you book, as service depends on the guardian's schedule. Drinking water comes from a reliable spring. Flush toilets are a rarity at this altitude and isolation level; there are no showers, so come prepared to stay dirty. The season runs roughly May through October, though snow can close access in late autumn. Winter access requires mountaineering skills and is not standard.

July and August fill quickly—aim to reserve 4–6 weeks ahead for those months. June, September and early October are quieter and often more pleasant.
