About
Refuge des Feneys sits at 1,850m in the Chaîne de Belledonne, east of Grenoble. The standard approach starts from the village of Entraigues-en-Oisans and climbs 3–4 hours through mixed forest to reach the hut. The route is well-marked and gains roughly 900m vertically. You can also approach from Livet-et-Gavet via the Pas de la Selle, a longer variant used by runners and experienced hikers. From the hut, trails radiate to Mont Blanc de Cheilon (2,928m, 2 hours return), Chabrière (2,859m), and into the Alpe d'Huez massif. The hut sits on the FFCAM network and makes a solid base for alpine walking and ridge traverses.
The refuge is run as a traditional mountain hut with 30-40 bed places in shared dormitories. Meals are served family-style: substantial evening meals and packed lunches available for the next day's walking. Hot showers are available. The guardian operates the hut from June through September, with a reduced shoulder season in May and October depending on snow conditions. Winter closure is standard. The hut has no electricity beyond solar panels and a backup generator, so phone signal is weak or absent.
Book directly with the guardian (contact via FFCAM or the Chaîne de Belledonne local tourist office) or email ahead during peak summer months (July–August), when the hut fills regularly. Saturday nights in July and early August require booking 4–6 weeks in advance. Outside peak season, walk-ins are usually welcome but confirm conditions ahead. Pack a sleeping bag liner—not all beds have blankets.
