Refuge D'Esparron

Refuge d'Esparron sits at 1,080m in the Isère, on the northern edge of Parc National des Écrins. The hut serves as a base for approaches to the Chaîne de Belledonne and routes into the park. Access is a 2-hour walk from the village of Saint-Sorlin-d'Arves via the GR55 trail, or 1.5 hours from Praz-de-Lys. The approach is steady but manageable, gaining around 400m through mixed forest.

The refuge runs as a working alpinist's base. It has 29 beds split across simple rooms and dorm spaces. Meals are available on request—expect traditional hut fare rather than restaurant cuisine. Water comes from a mountain stream. The hut operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche risk. Self-catering is possible if you bring food. Mobile signal is patchy. Electricity is limited, and there's no heating beyond a woodstove in the common area, so expect cold nights in shoulder seasons.

Book by email as early as possible if you're planning visits between June and September. July and August fill quickly. Outside summer, the hut sees fewer visitors but confirm opening status before setting out. Weekends are busier than weekdays. The refuge is run by volunteers who live there seasonally, so response times can be slower in shoulder months. Bring cash if possible—card facilities are unreliable.
