About
The Cabane de Bertol sits at 3,311m in the Mont-Collon massif on the Swiss-Italian border, roughly 3.5 hours' walk from Arolla in the Valais. Approach via the Lac Bleu and moraine slopes; the final section crosses scree and requires scrambling but no technical climbing. In winter, the route demands avalanche awareness and may require crampons.
The cabin holds 80 beds across shared dormitories. Half-board (dinner and breakfast) is standard; packed lunches are available. Water comes from a natural spring. The hut operates year-round but facilities are minimal outside summer (June–September). Winter visits require self-sufficiency and advance notice to the caretaker. The cabin serves as a base for Mont-Collon (3,637m), Breithorn (4,164m) and alpine training. Conditions above 3,300m are serious—plan for weather changes, rockfall, and crevasses on glaciated approaches.
Book accommodation directly with the SAC Section Neuchateloise. Contact them by email or phone at least 2 weeks ahead; 6 weeks is safer for July and August weekends. The hut is popular with mountaineers doing multi-day traverses, so Saturday nights fill quickly. Winter bookings need 3 weeks' notice to ensure a caretaker is present.

Start from Arolla and follow the trail past Lac Bleu and moraine slopes to the hut in 3.5 hours; the final approach crosses scree and loose rock with some scrambling but no roped climbing.
Half-board (dinner and breakfast) is standard; packed lunches available on request. Water is sourced naturally at the hut; toilets are basic but functional.
