Chalet Communal du Darbelay

Chalet Communal du Darbelay sits at 1484m in the Tarentaise valley near Bourg-Saint-Maurice in Savoie. The hut serves as a base for approaches to the Mont-Blanc massif and the Parc National de la Vanoise. Most parties reach it in 2–3 hours on foot from the village of Villaroger, following marked trails through forest and alpine meadow. Winter access is possible but requires avalanche awareness on the approach.

The chalet accommodates around 40 people in dormitory rooms and a few double spaces. The guardian provides meals on request, including simple dinners and breakfasts. Running water and basic heating are available, though facilities remain modest—expect a working hut rather than comfort accommodation. The hut operates year-round, though the guardian's presence and meal service depend on season; confirm availability before winter visits. The location works well for summer mountaineering circuits and as an overnight stop for longer Vanoise treks.

Book directly with the guardian or through the local commune office in Villaroger. The hut fills quickly during July and August, especially on weekends—aim to confirm your place at least 2 weeks ahead during peak season. Outside summer, contact the commune in advance to confirm the hut is staffed. Half-board rates are reasonable, though take cash; card payments are not always reliable in this location.
