Refuge de la Balme
3.9About
The refuge is run by the Fédération Française des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne (FFCAM). It sleeps around 50 people in dorm rooms. The kitchen serves dinner and breakfast; half-board is the standard arrangement. Water comes from a spring source. The hut runs year-round, though staffing and reliability are better in summer months (June to September). Outside these dates, call ahead to confirm opening and staffing. Toilets are basic but functional.
Book 2 to 3 months ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the FFCAM directly or check their online booking system. July and August are busy; shoulder season (June and September) is quieter. Winter bookings are rare but must be arranged by phone with the warden—expect sparse facilities and be entirely self-reliant. The hut accepts cash and some card payments; confirm payment methods when booking.
