Refuge du Plan

Refuge du Plan sits at 1,932m in the Parc National de la Vanoise, above the Vallon de Leisse east of Modane. Reach it from Modane via the hamlet of Villarodin, then a steady 4-5 hour walk up the valley. The trail crosses open pasture and enters larch forest. Most parties also use the hut as a base for climbs to peaks in the Dent Parrachée massif and the Chaîne de la Tarentaise nearby. Winter approaches are difficult; this is a summer and early autumn hut.
The refuge is small and basic. Expect around 30 beds in simple dormitory rooms and a handful of private spaces. The guardian serves hearty dinner and breakfast. Water is reliable. You'll find no hot showers—this is working hut territory, not a mountain hotel. The refuge operates June to September; exact dates depend on snow clearing and the guardian's schedule. Phone ahead in shoulder months to confirm opening. Winter is closed.
Book directly with the guardian by phone. July and August fill quickly for weekends; aim to call 2-3 weeks ahead for summer dates. May and early June are quieter. The hut takes groups and organised parties but prioritises individuals on the day. No online booking system exists. Arrive with cash: card payment is unreliable in this location.
