Rifugio Albert Deffeyes

Rifugio Albert Deffeyes sits at 2,500m in the Savoie Alps, accessible via the Val d'Aoste approach from the Italian side or from the Vallée de la Tarentaise on the French flank. Most hikers approach from Chamois (1,570m) in around 4 hours, gaining 930m on a well-marked trail that climbs steadily through larch forest before breaking into alpine terrain. The hut serves as a staging point for traverses across the Chaîne de la Tarentaise and access to higher passes including Col de la Seigne and Mont-Blanc massif approaches from the south.
The rifugio holds 92 beds across multiple dormitory rooms and a few private doubles. Half-board is standard—dinner and breakfast included—with packed lunches available on request. The kitchen caters to mixed French and Italian clientele, so expect hearty mountain food. A functioning WiFi connection means you can manage logistics before heading high. The hut operates year-round but staffing and meal service are limited in winter; confirm availability November through March before committing. Simple but adequate shower facilities and heating make it practical for acclimatisation nights before longer Alpine journeys.
Book by email or phone at least 4 weeks ahead for July and August, when the hut fills quickly with guided groups and independent trekkers. May and September see lighter traffic but more unpredictable weather. Phone ahead in shoulder seasons (April, October) to confirm the kitchen is running.
