Rifugio Balma

Rifugio Balma sits at 1986m in the Savoie Alps, on the Italian side of the Mont-Blanc massif. The standard approach is from the Val d'Aosta via Gressoney-la-Trinité, a steep 3–4 hour climb through pasture and rock. The hut serves as a base for traverses toward Punta Giordani and access to higher cols feeding into the Mont-Rose range. It's a serious hiking base, not a casual day-walk destination.
The rifugio has 30 beds across simple shared rooms. The CAI (Club Alpino Italiano) runs it with basic mountain hospitality: dinner and breakfast are provided, though facilities are minimal—expect cold water and communal toilets. The kitchen will pack lunches if ordered the night before. It operates June through September. Water comes from a spring; the hut has no electricity beyond what a small generator provides for essentials.
Book by calling ahead. July and August fill quickly, so contact the rifugio at least 4–6 weeks before your trip. Phone is the most reliable contact method; email responses can be slow. Half-board (bed, dinner, breakfast) is mandatory. Confirm your arrival time—the hut needs to know you're coming. Solo hikers should note the climb is exposed in sections and route-finding can be tricky in poor visibility; know the way down before dark.
