Rifugio Bartolomeo Gastaldi

Rifugio Bartolomeo Gastaldi sits at 2,659m in the Savoie Alps, accessed from the Vallée de la Maurienne. The main approach follows the Vallon de la Rocheure from Bessans, a 4-5 hour hike gaining 1,200m. You can also approach via the Col de l'Iseran from the north, though this route takes longer and is exposed to weather. Summer access is straightforward; winter approaches require mountaineering experience and avalanche awareness.
The refuge operates year-round and accommodates 76 guests in dormitory rooms. Meals are served daily—expect hearty mountain fare suited to high-altitude hiking. Hot showers are available. The hut sits on the Parc National de la Vanoise boundary and serves as a base for traverses across the Gran Paradiso massif and day climbs to surrounding peaks including Mont Blanc de Seisses (3,005m). Mobile coverage is poor; the hut has a radio for emergencies.
