Rifugio Chalet de L’Épée

Rifugio Chalet de L'Épée sits at 2,370m in the Savoie Alps, accessed from the Val d'Isère valley. The approach takes 3–4 hours on foot from Tignes or the Lac de Tignes, gaining roughly 900m through meadows and scree. A mule path makes the route straightforward but exposed in places; snow lingers into June. The hut marks a key waypoint on routes into the Parc National de la Vanoise and serves climbers approaching Mont-Blanc massif extensions.
The hut holds 80 beds across mixed dormitories and a few smaller rooms. Meals are served family-style in the dining area; the kitchen handles vegetarian requests if notified ahead. The bar stocks beer and local wine. Water comes from mountain springs. The season runs from mid-June to late September; winter access is possible only with mountaineering experience and avalanche assessment. Toilets are basic but clean; shower facilities are limited—bring a dry cloth.
Book directly by email or phone at least 4–6 weeks ahead, especially for July and August weekends. The hut is busy during school holidays and after good-weather spells. Arrive by early afternoon to secure a bed and catch the evening meal service. Half-board (bed plus dinner and breakfast) costs substantially less than paying à la carte. Cell signal is patchy; confirm your arrival date in writing rather than calling from the valley on the day itself.
