Rifugio Federico Chabod

Rifugio Federico Chabod sits at 2,710m on the Gran Paradiso massif in the Italian Alps, just across the border from the French Graian Alps. Reach it from Pont in the Valsavarenche valley (about 1.5 hours by car from Aosta). The main approach is a 2.5–3 hour hike from Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II at 2,732m, or a longer 4–5 hour push from lower Pont. The path is well-marked and rocky in places but straightforward for anyone comfortable with alpine terrain.

The hut runs 85 beds across small dormitories and offers hot showers—essential after the walk in. Meals are hearty and served family-style; book your dinner when you reserve. There's no WiFi, so expect genuine disconnection. The hut opens June through September, with peak traffic July–August and weekends year-round. It's positioned as a base for Gran Paradiso ascents and ridge traverses across the massif, making it popular with experienced hikers tackling multi-day routes through Parco Nazionale del Gran Paradiso.

Book 2–3 months ahead for July–August weekends; June and September have more space. Contact the rifugio directly by email or phone to confirm availability and order meals. Arrive by mid-afternoon to settle in before dinner service. The hut manager prefers advance notice of group bookings or dietary requirements. Assume cash only or confirm card acceptance when booking.
