Rifugio le Randonneur

Rifugio le Randonneur sits at 1895m in the Savoie Alps, serving as a solid base for day walks and multi-day traverses across the Massif de la Vanoise. You reach it from the Vallée de la Tarentaise via the hamlet of Peisey-Nancroix. Most parties walk up from Peisey in 2.5 to 3 hours, gaining roughly 800m on a mix of forest track and alpine path. The hut is well-positioned for accessing higher terrain: the Chalets de Nancroix and Col de la Loze lie within a morning's walk, while longer circuits connect to neighbouring valleys.

The refuge operates year-round and holds around 40 beds in mixed and private rooms. It serves hearty dinners and substantial breakfasts; packed lunches are available with notice. Showers and basic drying facilities are standard. The atmosphere remains relaxed and walker-focused rather than climbing-oriented. Winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche risk—contact ahead if planning off-season visits. The hut is managed by FFCAM (Fédération Française des Clubs Alpins et de Montagne) and sits within easy reach of the Parc National de la Vanoise.

Book direct by phone or email at least a week ahead during July and August; weekends fill quickly year-round. The hut is quietest in May, June, September and October. Staff speak French and basic English. Half-board (demi-pension) is standard; full self-catering is not possible but provisions can be supplemented from Peisey village before heading up.
