Rifugio Monzino

Rifugio Monzino sits at 2,590m in the Parc National de la Vanoise, accessed from the Pralognan-la-Vanoise valley. The standard approach takes 4-5 hours from Pralognan, climbing steadily through alpine meadows to the Lac de la Vanoise and then onto the hut. The route is well-marked but gains 1,100m, so start early. Most hikers use this as a staging point for the Mont-Blanc massif or to traverse the Chamonix-Zermatt route.
The hut holds 55 beds across shared dormitories. Meals are served family-style: half-board includes dinner and breakfast; packed lunches are available. Water comes from the glacier melt above the hut—reliable but sometimes silty after warm spells. The refuge runs from mid-June to mid-September, dependent on snow conditions. Cell reception is poor to non-existent.
Book early from April onward if targeting July or August. Contact the hut directly by phone or email for availability and to arrange packed lunches. July and August weekends fill weeks in advance. June and September offer shorter queues and better solitude on the high routes, though weather is less stable. The hut sits within protected park boundaries: no drones, no pets. Arrive with cash in euros—electronic payments are unreliable at altitude.
