Rifugio Massimo Mila

Rifugio Massimo Mila sits at 2,835m in the Cottian Alps on the Italian side of the Mont Viso massif. Reach it from Crissolo (in Piedmont) via a well-marked trail that climbs steadily through alpine meadow and scree for 3.5 hours. The hut works as a base for Mont Viso ascents and as a waypoint on multi-day ridge traverses in this relatively quiet section of the Alps. Water and a reliable trail make this approach straightforward even in shoulder seasons.
The refuge holds 40 people across a mix of dormitory and private rooms. Meals are served family-style at set times; half-board is the standard arrangement. Shower facilities are available. The hut operates June through September with extended weekend opening in May and October depending on snow conditions. No WiFi—bring a book or enjoy the silence. A small camping area outside can absorb overflow on busy weekends.
Book at least two months ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the guardian directly by email or phone to check availability and confirm meal preferences. July is consistently busy; June and September offer better odds of a bed on short notice. Winter access is possible by ski but requires prior arrangement with the hut.
