Alpe Obere Kalle

Alpe Obere Kalle sits at 1,201m in the Allgäu Alps east of Oberstdorf. Reach it from Oberstdorf village via the Stillachtal valley on a well-marked hiking trail—2 hours from the start. The path gains 500m steadily through mixed forest and alpine meadow. You can also approach from Reichenbach im Allgäu to the east, which takes roughly 2.5 hours. The alp is set back from the main ridge, making it accessible year-round when conditions allow, though winter access depends on snow cover.

This is a working alpine dairy farm as much as a hut. Capacity is limited—around 30 beds in simple rooms. They serve traditional Allgäu food: cheese, bread, soups, and hearty main dishes. Meals are available for residents and day-hikers. The hut has no shower facilities, though basic washing is possible. They operate year-round but confirm ahead for winter; staffing and meals vary by season. This is a quiet base for exploring the Allgäu foothills and ridge walks toward Nebelhorn rather than a hub hut on a major climbing route.

Call ahead to book, especially for weekends and July–August. They fill quickly during school holidays. A day's notice works for off-season visits, but book 2–3 weeks ahead for peak season. No online booking system exists—phone contact is essential. They accept cash and bank transfer for payment.
