Edmund-Probst-Haus

Edmund-Probst-Haus sits at 1932m in the Allgäu Alps, accessible from the Söllereck cable car station near Oberstdorf. Most hikers reach it in 2–2.5 hours on foot from Söllereck, following the ridge trail eastward through open alpine meadow. The approach is straightforward and gains roughly 400m elevation. You can also approach from the Gerstruben valley to the south, a longer but less crowded option taking 3–3.5 hours.
The hut has 80 beds across several dormitories and a few double rooms. Meals focus on traditional Bavarian fare; half-board is available and dinner should be ordered when you book. The hut operates year-round, though services are reduced in winter. Water comes from a spring. The hut is run by DAV Sektion Immenstadt and welcomes hikers of all levels. Views sweep across the Allgäu limestone peaks toward Austria.
Book directly by phone, especially for Friday and Saturday nights and any time during July–August when the hut fills reliably. Winter weekends also draw crowds. The hut prefers advance notice for group bookings. Solo hikers and small groups can often find space with shorter notice, but calling ahead remains the safest approach.
