Mittagalpe

Mittagalpe sits at 1210m in the Allgäu Alps, an hour's walk from Oberstdorf. The hut anchors a network of summer trails that climb toward the Hochvogel (2,127m) and Rauhhorn (2,385m). Most hikers reach it from the Birgsau valley trailhead, following the stream uphill through beech forest. The approach is steady but never steep—suitable for walkers of varying fitness who want an early-season base. Winter snow closes access reliably from November to April.
Mittagalpe operates as a DAV staffed hut with 50 beds in shared dorms. The kitchen serves simple dinners and hearty breakfasts using local produce. Running water exists; showers depend on the season. The hut books solid from July to September, particularly weekends. Half-board (bed plus dinner and breakfast) is standard. Most climbers treat it as a staging point for Hochvogel ascents rather than a destination in itself.
Reserve four to six weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Direct booking is essential; the hut rarely holds beds for walk-ins. Contact the DAV section in Oberstdorf or phone the hut keeper in late May once the season opens. Winter mountaineers should call ahead to confirm access conditions.
