Untere Ochsenalpe

Untere Ochsenalpe sits at 1,576m in the Allgäu Alps, a two-hour walk from Oberstdorf via the Trettach valley. The approach is steady and straightforward, climbing through meadow and light forest to reach the hut. Summer hikers use it as a base for traversing the Allgäu ridges or connecting to other huts in the range. The location works equally well as a stopping point on longer routes through the Bavarian Alps.

The hut operates year-round and offers around 40 beds split between dormitory and smaller rooms. The kitchen serves hot meals at lunch and dinner, with vegetarian options standard. You'll find basic shower facilities and a simple refuge atmosphere—this is working mountain country, not a polished destination. There's no WiFi, so expect genuine disconnection. The hut keeper runs a small dairy operation on the property, which shapes the character of the place. Beer and soft drinks are available.

Book directly by email or phone at least four weeks ahead for July and August weekends. July and August weekends fill quickly, especially among German hikers.
