Most hikers approach via Hörnle (1,534m) as a day hike or overnight stop on multi-day traverses of the Ammergau range. The hut lies on established trails linking the Laber and Hochplötzergrat ridges, making it useful for circuits rather than a destination endpoint.

Barbarahütte manages 54 beds across multiple rooms. The Naturfreunde (NaturFreunde Deutschlands) runs it as a working hut, not a tourist lodge. Showers and flush toilets work reliably. Drinking water comes from the hut supply. Expect simple meals—typically soup, pasta, schnitzel, and local cheese plates. The kitchen serves from May through October. Winter access depends on snow conditions; phone ahead if you plan a winter visit. Bring a sleeping bag or rent bedding; confirm availability when booking.
