Kreuzeckhaus

Kreuzeckhaus sits at 1,652m in the Ammergau Alps, above the Loisach valley between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Oberammergau. The standard approach follows the Hörnle trail from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a sustained climb of roughly 900m vertical that takes 3–3.5 hours. Alternative routes exist from Oberammergau and via the Schachen; all approaches are well-marked and gain elevation steadily through mixed forest before breaking into alpine meadows near the hut. The location makes it a natural stop for ridge traverses across the Ammergau range or as a base for ascents of surrounding peaks.
The DAV Sektion Garmisch-Partenkirchen operates this mountain hut with around 70 beds split between dormitories and a few double rooms. Half-board is standard. The kitchen serves simple but adequate meals; vegetarian options are available if pre-arranged. The hut has no shower but provides washbasins and toilets. There is no wi-fi. The hut opens year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and avalanche danger—confirm current conditions before setting out in cold months. Dogs are permitted but should be trained and kept under control on the approach.
Book directly by phone with the hut. July and August are busy; reserve at least 6–8 weeks ahead. June, September and early October fill steadily too. Weekends are busier than weekdays. Winter bookings can usually be arranged with shorter notice, though you should call ahead to confirm the hut is staffed and accessible.
