About

The Kilianshütte stands at 1,874m in the Chiemgau Alps, on the eastern flank of the Hochries massif. You reach it in 2.5 hours from the Marquartstein valley. The approach climbs steadily through beech forest, then opens onto alpine meadows. Most hikers start from Marquartstein village and follow the marked trail via Rottau. The hut sits on a natural saddle with views across the Chiemgau toward the Berchtesgaden Alps. From here you can traverse to neighboring peaks or descend into the Prien valley.
The hut holds 30 beds split between a main dormitory and smaller rooms. Half-board is standard. Meals focus on hearty Bavarian cooking. The kitchen serves non-residents lunch from 12:00–14:00 if space permits. There's no electricity and water comes from the spring; the hut operates year-round but expect basic heating only in winter. Cell reception is unreliable. The DAV manages the property.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone or through the alpine-huts.com booking system. Solo hikers often find space even without advance notice. The hut is quietest midweek in June and September. Winter access requires snow sense and an ice axe; call ahead to confirm if the hut is staffed.
