Krottenwaldhütte

Krottenwaldhütte sits at 1,140m in the Ammergau Alps south of Oberammergau. The hut is a 2.5-hour walk from Unterammergau via the Ammer valley trail, or 2 hours from Oberammergau heading southeast through mixed forest. Both routes are well-marked and gain elevation gradually. The hut location makes it a solid base for day walks across the northern Ammergau ridges and a logical overnight stop on longer traverses toward Linderhof or the Säuling massif.
Krottenwaldhütte is a DAV-affiliated mountain inn with 50 beds across multiple rooms. The kitchen serves hearty Bavarian fare at lunch and dinner; half-board is standard for overnight guests. Basic facilities include running water and flush toilets, though this is a working hut rather than a luxury refuge. The hut operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and you should confirm opening before visiting November through March.
Book 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone or the DAV booking system. Midweek visits see far fewer people. The hut sits on a popular weekend circuit for Munich-based hikers, so expect crowds on Saturdays and Sundays during peak season.
