Stuibenhütte

Stuibenhütte sits at 920m in the Ammergau Alps south of Oberammergau, a 1-hour walk from the village via the Stuiben gorge. The approach follows the Ammer river through a narrow canyon with fixed chains and wooden steps bolted into the rock—the technical grade is modest but the route is exposed in places. From Oberammergau train station, walk south to the gorge entrance or start from Schloss Linderhof for a longer loop. The hut is accessible year-round on foot, though the gorge can be impassable after heavy rain or in icy winter conditions.

The hut is a working farm building with basic accommodation for around 20 guests in simple rooms and dormitories. Meals are Bavarian home cooking: soups, schnitzel, bread, cheese, and coffee. The DAV-affiliated operator keeps the hut open daily March through November and weekends in winter. There is no electricity; heating is wood-fired. The location makes it popular for short breaks from Oberammergau rather than as a stage on longer routes.

Book directly by phone or email at least 2 weeks ahead for weekends. July and August weekends fill quickly. The hut is modest and rustic—bring a headtorch and expect communal dining. Winter visitors should confirm access conditions with the hut before arriving, as snow can block the gorge approach.
