Berggasthaus Herzogstand

Berggasthaus Herzogstand sits at 1575m on the Herzogstand ridge between Kochelsee and Walchensee in the Bavarian pre-Alps. Reach it via the steep Herzogstandbahn cable car from Kochel (20 minutes), or hike up from the valley in 2.5 hours on good paths. The descent from Heimgarten to the north takes 1.5 hours. Most hikers use this as a lunch stop on ridge traverses, but it works as an overnight base for exploring the Heimgarten-Herzogstand circuit and access to the Walchensee valley trails.
The hut has 30 beds across simple, shared rooms. Food is standard Bavarian hut fare: schnitzel, käsespätzle, decent coffee, and hearty soups. They serve lunch and dinner daily. Facilities include basic showers and a sun terrace overlooking the lake. The hut opens year-round but expect reduced services November through March. Winter access relies entirely on the cable car. The main season runs May through October, when the ridge is reliably snow-free and the terrace fills quickly in good weather.
Book direct by phone several weeks ahead for summer weekends and school holidays. July and August weekends fill 4–6 weeks in advance. Weekday visits have far fewer crowds. The hut accepts cash and card payments. Winter bookings are flexible; you'll rarely encounter crowds from November to April. Arrive before 12:30 for guaranteed hot lunch, especially on Sundays when Munich day-hikers arrive via the cable car.
