Breitenberghütte

The Breitenberghütte sits at 1050m on the northern slopes of the Breitenberg in the Bavarian Alps, near Pfronten in the Ostallgäu region. Access is straightforward: from the village of Pfronten (on the main road between Füssen and Kempten), follow marked trails up through mixed forest to the hut. The walk takes roughly 1.5 hours from the trailhead. The hut is also accessible from Bad Hindelang to the east. Most hikers use this as a base for exploring local day walks rather than a multi-day alpine pass.
The Breitenberghütte has around 30 beds in simple shared rooms. Meals focus on hearty mountain fare: expect Schweinebraten, soups, and fresh bread. The hut operates year-round, though staffing is limited in winter months—check ahead if visiting November to March. Facilities include toilets, basic washrooms, and a small dining area with views northwest toward the Säuling. There is no electricity in rooms. The hut is managed by Naturfreunde Deutschland, the outdoor club aligned with the DAV.
Phone ahead to check availability and place a meal order, particularly on weekends when the hut fills quickly with day hikers from nearby towns. July and August see steady traffic; you should book 4–6 weeks in advance. Smaller groups often find space on weekday evenings outside summer season. The hut accepts cash and card payments.
