Brünnsteinhaus

Brünnsteinhaus sits at 1,342m on the Brünnstein in the Mangfall range, roughly 90 minutes' drive southeast of Munich. The hut is reachable from the Bayrischzell-Fischbach parking area in 2.5 hours on foot via the Rotwand trail, or from Oberhöchstädt in under 2 hours if you take the steeper direct approach. This is genuine hill country, not a destination for distant views, but a solid base for forays into the densely wooded northern Bavarian Alps.

The DAV Sektion Rosenheim operates this 40-bed hut year-round as a working mountain hostel. It serves hearty Bavarian fare at lunch and dinner, and provides dormitory and a few smaller rooms. Facilities are functional rather than luxurious: basic showers, no frills. The hut attracts families and hiking groups doing loop routes across the Mangfall peaks—Rotwand, Brünnstein itself, Hochriss—rather than the high-altitude circuit crowd. Opening times vary seasonally; winter weekends and holidays require advance notice.

Book by phone directly with the hut. Saturdays and Sundays fill quickly year-round, particularly in autumn. July and August attract school holiday traffic but remain manageable if you book 6-8 weeks ahead. Weekday slots are almost always available. The hut takes cash and card payments. Arrive with realistic expectations: you're paying for a clean bed, hot food, and a sensible base camp in accessible terrain, not alpine atmosphere.
