Dr.-Hugo-Beck-Haus

Dr.-Hugo-Beck-Haus sits at 1260m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, accessible from the village of Schönau am Königssee. The approach takes 2.5 hours on foot from Schönau, following the Königssee shoreline before climbing steadily through forest. You can also reach the hut from the Hintersee valley to the west in roughly 3 hours. The location works well as a base for day walks into the surrounding limestone peaks or as a stage on multi-day traverses through the Berchtesgaden massif.
The hut offers 50 beds across mixed dorms and double rooms. Full board is available—the kitchen produces hearty Bavarian food for dinner and packed lunches. Running water and basic toilets are standard. The hut opens year-round, though staffing is reduced in winter months. It's a working DAV hut, so members of alpine clubs get slightly reduced rates on accommodation and meals. Non-members pay full price but are always welcome.
Book by phone as far ahead as possible. July and August fill quickly—aim for spring booking if you're planning a summer visit. Weekends are busier than weekdays even in shoulder seasons. The hut staff will hold a reservation for 48 hours without a deposit, though paying a small advance is safer for summer dates. They accept cash and German bank transfer. The phone line is staffed during daytime hours only, so call between 9am and 5pm Central European Time.
