Molteraualm

Molteraualm sits at 1,520m on the western flank of the Berchtesgaden Alps, above the Ramsau village. Reach it from Ramsau by hiking the Molterau valley for 2–2.5 hours on a clear, well-marked trail. The approach follows the Ramsauer Ache stream and gains elevation steadily through mixed forest. The hut serves as a useful base for day walks into the surrounding peaks and as a rest point on longer traverses through the range. Winter access is unreliable due to avalanche terrain, so plan visits between May and October.
Molteraualm is a modest DAV hut run by the local section. It has capacity for around 30 people in a mix of dormitory and private rooms. The kitchen serves hearty Bavarian fare at lunch and dinner; book your meals when you reserve your bed. Showers and toilets are basic but functional. The hut sits on grazing pasture with views north toward the Wimbach gorge and west to the Hochkalter massif. On clear days, the morning light across the Berchtesgaden basin makes the early start worthwhile.
Book directly with the hut by phone or email at least 4–6 weeks ahead for July and August. May, June, and September see fewer crowds. The hut fills quickly on weekends year-round. Expect a modest hut experience: come for the walking, not the amenities. Supplies are limited, so bring snacks and sun protection from the valley.
