Purtschellerhaus

Purtschellerhaus sits at 1692m in the Berchtesgaden Alps, on the ridge between Wimbachtal and Wimbach Gruben. Most hikers approach from Ramsau bei Berchtesgaden via the Wimbachtal trail, a steady 3-hour ascent gaining roughly 800m. The hut stands on a key pass route with views into both valleys and makes a logical stop for multi-day loops in the region.

The DAV-managed hut (Sektion Sonneberg) operates year-round and sleeps around 60 people in mixed dormitories. Meals focus on hearty Alpine fare—expect good soups, schnitzel, and Kaiserschmarrn. The hut has no shower but offers washbasins and basic toilets. Water comes from mountain springs. This is functional mountain accommodation, not luxury. Summer sees heavy foot traffic; shoulder seasons are quieter. The hut sits above the tree line, so weather protection and warm layers matter year-round.

Book directly by phone well ahead during July and August—4–6 weeks minimum for peak season. Winter months fill less predictably but still require advance notice. The hut team speaks German primarily; English support is limited but staff will help with bookings. Arrive with small change for extras. The location makes this hut essential for traverses linking the Berchtesgaden massifs, so don't assume walk-up availability on weekends.
