Watzmannhaus

Watzmannhaus sits at 1,930m on the eastern flank of the Watzmann massif, above Berchtesgaden. You reach it from Schellenschlacht (1,326m) via the Watzmannkar route in 3 to 3.5 hours. The trail climbs steadily through open terrain with exposure in places—bring sure footing and respect the alpine conditions. Bad weather changes approach fast here. The hut also serves as a base for mountaineers tackling the Watzmann's three summits (Mittelspitze 2,713m, Hochkalter ridge traverses, and longer range circuits across the Berchtesgaden Alps).
The DAV-managed hut holds 50 beds across shared rooms. Half board is standard (supper and breakfast included). The kitchen serves hearty mountain food—expect traditional Bavarian fare. The hut has no shower facilities; bring a change of socks and acceptance of minimal washing. Open year-round, though winter access is only for experienced alpinists with appropriate gear. Staff are friendly and used to managing the Watzmannhaus's remote exposure.
Book directly by phone several months ahead for July and August weekends. May through September is peak season. The hut fills quickly during school holidays and fine-weather weekends.
