Majerca

Majerca sits at 1,500m on the Matajur plateau in the Carnic Alps, on the border between Friuli Venezia Giulia and Slovenia. Reach it from the village of Cividale del Friuli via the Natisone Valley—allow 3 hours for the approach hike, which gains 800m steadily through beech and spruce forest. The final section opens onto high pasture with views into Slovenia. From the hut, you can walk to Matajur (1,641m) in 45 minutes. The ridge walk toward Prezentina extends the day to 5–6 hours of ridge hiking with exposure but straightforward scrambling.

The hut offers basic accommodation for around 40 guests in dormitory rooms. Evening meals feature hearty local cooking—try the casunziei (ravioli parcels filled with potato and herbs). Breakfast is available. The hut has a small bar and sits on the main hiking route through the Carniche, so it fills quickly in summer. Water comes from a mountain spring. Toilet facilities are basic but functional. The hut operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions—many hikers walk in from lower elevations if the road closes.
