Refuge Fornas

Rifugio Fornas sits at 961m in the Carnian Alps of Friuli Venezia Giulia, deep in the Natisone River valley. The hut serves as a base for valley walks and ridge traverses across the Colovrat massif. Reach it from Pulfero village in about 90 minutes on marked trail, or approach via longer routes from Savogna to the south. Most hikers use it as a stop on multi-day circuits rather than a single-night halt.

The rifugio is small and straightforward. It offers 30 beds in simple rooms, a dining room with local cooking, and a basic bar. Meals focus on regional Friuli dishes and polenta. The hut is open year-round but operates on limited winter hours—expect only weekends and holidays from November to March. Water comes from a spring; showers are cold. The setting is quiet and working-class, not a glossy destination hut.

Book ahead during summer weekends and July, especially if you're part of a larger group. Contact the hut directly by phone or email to reserve beds and confirm meals. The owners prefer advance notice for dinner. Winter visits require a call to confirm the hut is staffed. This is a genuine mountain refuge run by locals, not a tourist operation.
