Rifugio Forestale Viazzi

Liguria, Italy

About

Rifugio Forestale Viazzi sits at 1,500m on the Ligurian side of the Maritime Alps, roughly 3.5 hours' walk from Colle di Nava (1,371m). Most hikers approach from the south via Ponte di Nava or from the north through the Val Tanaro. The refuge commands views across the Ligurian interior and serves as a solid staging post for routes toward Cima di Pietravecchia (2,052m) and the ridge lines running east toward Monesi di Triora.

The hut has 30 beds across simple dormitory rooms and offers half-board meals with regional Ligurian cooking. The refuge runs year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions. Water is reliable. The kitchen can handle standard requests, so mention dietary needs when booking. Toilets are functional but basic; showers cost extra. The refuge is managed by Liguria's forestry service and maintains close ties with CAI groups in Genoa and Imperia.

Book direct through the refuge phone line or email at least two weeks ahead for weekends, especially May through September and during Easter holidays. July and August fill quickly with groups doing multi-day ridge traverses. Winter visits require advance notice to confirm road access and heating. The rifugio is not on rifugio.net, so direct contact is essential. Arrive by mid-afternoon to secure dinner service.

Approach from Colle di Nava (1,371m) in 3.5 hours heading north, or from Ponte di Nava to the south—both standard valley approaches. Total ascent is around 1,100m depending on your starting point.
Half-board meals (dinner and breakfast) are standard; packed lunches available on request. The hut has 30 beds in dormitory rooms; showers are basic and water may be heated on request only.
Suitable for fit hikers with mountain experience—the approach is straightforward but exposed at altitude. Families with children aged 10+ who are comfortable on steep terrain can manage it; it's not ideal for young children or inexperienced walkers.
