Refuge Mongioie

Rifugio Mongioie sits at 1,520m in the Ligurian Alps, a 3-hour walk from Ponte di Nava on the France–Italy border. The hut anchors routes across the Colle delle Finestre and down to the coastal towns of Imperia. Summer hikers use it as a base for day walks across high pasture and forest; winter access depends on snow conditions. The ridge location means exposure to weather—bring a windproof layer regardless of the forecast.

The rifugio has 30 beds spread across basic dormitory rooms. Meals are solid mountain fare: pasta, meat, and local cheese. The kitchen serves dinner and breakfast to residents; you can usually arrange packed lunches. Water comes from a spring on site. There's no shower, but washing facilities exist. The hut runs year-round, though staffing is sparse in winter—call ahead if you plan an off-season visit. Staff speak some English but Italian is safer.

Book through CAI Albenga or contact the hut directly. July and August fill quickly; reserve at least two months in advance for those months. June, September and early October are quieter and often have better weather. The hut sits on CAI's network, so CAI members get small discounts. Phone ahead in autumn and winter—snow can force temporary closure without warning.
